Frequently Asked Questions

I know starting counselling can feel like a big step, so here are some answers to common questions people often have before beginning.

What is the cost of a session?

Sessions are $175 for 1 hour.

Do you accept Mental Health Care Plans (MHCPs)?

Yes, I accept MHCP referrals from your GP. With a referral, you will receive a Medicare rebate, which reduces your out-of-pocket expense to $87.75 per session.

How long does a session go for?

Each session runs for 1 hour.

What types of appointments do you offer?

I offer:

  • In-person sessions in Cairns

  • Telehealth sessions (video)

  • Phone sessions

This flexibility allows you to access support in the way that feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know each other. We’ll talk about:

  • Your current concerns and presenting issues

  • Your background and history

  • Your goals for counselling

This helps us create a plan that feels tailored to your needs.

How often should I attend sessions?

The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Many people find fortnightly sessions beneficial, as this provides consistency and momentum in the counselling process. When sessions are spaced too far apart, it can be harder to maintain progress.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, your privacy is very important. What you share in counselling stays confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions (such as risk of harm to yourself or others).
You can read more about this in detail on my Privacy Policy page: https://theheartcentredtherapist.com/privacy-info.

Do you provide crisis support?

No, I am not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent support, please call 000.

Can I bring my child to counselling sessions?

I understand that organising childcare isn’t always easy, and sometimes it can feel like the only option is to bring your child along. However, because adult counselling sessions often involve sensitive conversations, it’s usually best not to have young children present — hearing these discussions can be confusing or distressing for them.

If childcare is tricky, please don’t worry, we can explore alternatives together, such as booking a telehealth session at a time that works best for you. My aim is to make counselling as accessible and supportive as possible, while also keeping the space safe for you to speak freely.

If you have a question that isn’t listed here, please don’t hesitate to call on 0466 878 555 or email theheartcentredtherapist@theheartcentredtherapist.com
